Local Yaak Families Report Bountiful Shaggy Mane Harvest!

The Shaggy Mane harvest in Yaak is in full swing! Besides it being a bountiful bear season and grouse to boot, shaggy manes are abundant! Coprinus comatus – Wikipedia will give you a brief description of the delicate mushroom. Our family has picked loads of them over the years. Though I’m not (personally) a big fan, a lot of my family relishes this time of the year and it’s definitely a Yaak tradition through and through. As the crisp early October days bring the vibrant fall colors and the Larch Bloom comes on, there seems to be no place like this wild and abundant location!

I love getting outdoors for walks with the kids and helping the kids spot them! It won’t be long before they start finding them all on their own! There is just nothing quite like it. The exercise is fantastic. The fresh air is intoxicating. The kids and dogs are always several steps ahead of me. Once they know how to spot em’ there’s no turning back! Foraging is a lifelong skill that you can do at any age. Shaggy Manes are an easy bounty hard to confuse with other varieties.
